The Dahe Ancient City in Hami, Xinjiang, was once garrisoned by the Yiwu army of the Tang Dynasty (618-907).  

The soldiers came from all over China, bringing not only their determination to defend the frontier but also farming tools, techniques, and seeds from the Central Plains.
