What's it like to walk a border patrol route
In Xinjiang's borderlands, we walked a path that simulates a guard's daily patrol — at over 3,000 meters, every step is hard. Here, the nearest village is just 10 kilometers from the border. A few steps in, we were already breathless — and this was only a simulation.
For the real guards, this is life, day after day. Their motto: "One thing for life — guarding the border." Huang Mingzhang, a guide from Guangdong of the education base for protecting the border, has been working in Tugumaiti township for three years. "Their dedication," he said, "is why I want to tell their story."
